Common Mistakes That Can Void Your HVAC Warranty
When you have a new HVAC system installed, you receive a warranty with it. An HVAC warranty is extremely beneficial to have, and should be kept intact to save you money and hassle in the short and the long run. Unfortunately, these warranties are often overlooked and easily voided! Prevent yourself from making any mistakes that can void your HVAC warranty by learning about what’s in the fine print.
Registering Your System
Getting your HVAC system registered is a simple step, yet it is so often forgotten. Once your new HVAC system is installed, your HVAC technician will provide you with the manufacturer’s warranty information. Many manufacturers will require you to register your system within a certain time frame for the warranty to be in good standing.
For American Standard air conditioners, every system is covered by the Base Limited Warranty. However, there are additional coverages available that you can choose from when registering your system. The Registered Limited Warranty requires the customer to register the new system within 60 days of installation. Simply completing this warranty can extend your warranty coverage up to 10 years.
What About A System In A Pre-Owned Home?
If you have a pre-owned home, you’re probably wondering if the warranty still applies to the system that’s already there. This is a common concern. When purchasing or selling a home, what happens to the HVAC warranty? With American Standard, the Registered Limited Warranty can be easily transferred to the new owner. As long as the system is in good standing with the current owner’s warranty, all that’s required is a one-time $99 transfer fee completed within 90 days of the home’s purchase. If you have a system of a different brand, call them to find out what warranty they offer. Many times, the warranty can be transferred within a specific time frame.
Hiring A Licensed Contractor
For your warranty to apply, you must have your HVAC system installed by a licensed technician. A qualified technician will properly size and install a system in your home to ensure proper operation for years to come. With a properly trained technician, your entire unit and all of its components will be covered by your warranty because in this case, it’s likely if something goes wrong, it has to do with a broken part that can easily be replaced. Don’t cut corners when hiring an HVAC technician to install your new system. If you’re on the hunt for the best HVAC contractors around, give Sleeping Giant a call.
Routine Maintenance
Many manufacturers recommend and require routine maintenance on your new HVAC system. Most HVAC contractors encourage customers to enroll in their scheduled maintenance programs to take the stress out of scheduling it on your own twice a year! Servicing your system regularly will catch any potential issues before they become a big problem. Any repairs resulting from lack of routine maintenance will often not be covered by your warranty. Deliberate or Accidental Damage
Accidents happen! Unfortunately, they are not covered by your HVAC warranty. For your outdoor unit, any fertilizers, waste water, acts of God, improper handling, and more, are not covered by your warranty. For this reason, it’s important to read the exclusions section in your warranty. This can easily be found online or in your warranty paperwork provided. All in all, ensure outdoor items are sturdy or tied down to keep from blowing into the system, remove plants and bushes from within 3 feet of the system, keep your kids from playing around the outdoor system, and remind yourself to be careful as well.
