Preparing Your HVAC System for the Holiday Season

Preparing Your HVAC System for the Holiday Season

We love the holiday season. Nothing is more special than being able to cozy up and celebrate with your family and friends. In order to fully enjoy your fall and winter festivities, your HVAC system needs to be up to par. If your comfort system is operating at maximum efficiency, you and your guests will be able to comfortably enjoy the holiday cheer in your home. Use our recommendations below to prepare your HVAC system for the upcoming months of festivities.

Replace Your HVAC Filters

Let’s start off easy! Replacing your HVAC filters is a simple task which will make a surprisingly big difference. The summer season usually causes large amounts of dirt and pollen to be tracked into your home, which can clog up your air filters. Then as you pull out the holiday decorations, a lot of extra dust can be released into your air. Once your air filters become clogged, your HVAC system will struggle to push air through. The dirty filters will cause your system to work overtime, and your home may feel unevenly heated or never quite warm enough, while you’re also breathing in air that’s not as clean as it could be. Be sure to inspect your air filters to see if they are clogged and replace them if necessary. Your home will feel so much more comfortable!

Sign Up for Maintenance

Maybe you’ve heard us say this a few times, but it’s for good reason! Seasonal maintenance is crucial to your comfort system’s success throughout EVERY season for years to come. Your HVAC system is an investment, similar to a car, and it should be routinely maintained as such. Our trained technicians will inspect, service, and provide any recommendations for your system. This increases the efficiency of your system, saving you money in the short and the long run. Additionally, necessary repairs are oftentimes brought to your attention before they become a major problem. Nobody wants an HVAC system breakdown, especially when having guests over for the holidays. Schedule your maintenance appointment with us today!

Clean & Clear Your Air Vents

As you break out the decorations, be careful in your placement. If you need to move couches, rugs, or other furniture to make room, be sure to keep these pieces off of your air vents. Blocked air vents will result in uneven air flow throughout your home. Both your supply and return vents need to be fully exposed in order to have proper circulation. While this may require some repositioning of your favorite decor, we promise it’s worthwhile!

It’s also a good idea to clean your air vents before guests arrive. If you haven’t glanced at them in a while, they’re likely filled with dust and other debris that’s hindering your air quality. Remove vent covers, wash them with warm soapy water, dry and replace them. You’ll experience better air flow and air quality for the holiday season!

Program Your Thermostat

It’s important to reprogram your thermostat as the weather changes, but also as you welcome guests into your home. Having more people in your home will make it warmer than usual. Consider turning your thermostat down a few degrees prior to your visitors coming over. You should also change your thermostat’s schedule to best accommodate the comfort needs of your guests. If you’re normally gone during the day and have the thermostat set to that schedule, you may want to change it to have a consistent temperature throughout the day while everyone is home.

Check Carbon Monoxide & Smoke Detectors

While this checkpoint may seem small, it’s extremely important nonetheless! Head around your home to test each smoke and carbon monoxide detector to ensure they are all operating properly. Replace batteries as needed or replace the entire detector if it’s not functioning properly. This could make all the difference in your family’s safety during the holidays.
